Artist’s Statement

My eyes are drawn to beauty, geometry, and humor, all of which I seek to capture on film. These elements are everywhere, and I see them in people, nature, and architecture. My work usually combines some or all of these subjects, and a bit of mystery. It is my attempt capture small cross sections of God’s majesty and creation. Some of my images are more concrete in meaning, others are devoid of it altogether. I see value in both. Sometimes I do seek technical precision, other times… not so much. Ultimately, I try not to take my work so seriously. I invite the viewer to personally connect with each photograph and find their own meaning, create a story, or simply enjoy the aesthetic of the image.

Bio

Currently living in his home town of Cleveland, Ohio, Jack Smith (b. 1993) is an American photographer. He has been exploring photography since receiving his first point-and-shoot camera on Christmas morning at the age of 8. In 2009, he was introduced to manual film processing and printmaking through his high school’s robust photography program. Enamored with the process, he has all but abandoned digital photography in favor of the more physical, hands on medium of film. Since then, his works have been exhibited at various local institutions, including the Cleveland Print Room and the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. He is currently working on a new exhibition, and experimenting with new formats of film and alternative processes.
